Dateline -- [The LONE STAR FLIGHT MUSEUM] today announced ...
[GALVESTON - The Lone Star Flight Museum, home of the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame,
will honor women in aviation at the 8th Annual Spirit of Flight Air
Show & WalkAbout, April 25 & 26, 1998.
The Lone Star Flight Museum, based on Galveston Island, ranks among the
finest aviation museums in the nation, and houses the largest collection of
historically significant, restored aircraft in the Southern United States.
Restored to flying condition, much of the collection has earned numerous
prestigious awards for 'best of type', the most recent being received by
the Museum's recently restored Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless which received the
Oshkosh '97 Reserve Grand Champion Warbird and Golden Wrench awards.
It is an honor for the Flight Museum to have the opportunity to pay tribute
to the Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II as they were the first
women to fly military airplanes during wartime and have a strong connection
to the legendary Warbirds housed on the island. Pioneers in the areas of
aircraft compressibility, problems of speed and stability and the sound
barrier, the WASPs are among the few women who rapidly moved from piston
propulsion into jet and rocket power.
In addition to the WASPs, other women in aviation who will participate at
the Spirit of Flight Air Show & WalkAbout include Mary Dilda, the first
woman to win a national air race (Reno Air Races '97), glider and
aerobatics pilots.
Lone Star Flight Museum aircraft presenting a World War II demonstration,
complete with a powerful pyrotechnic display include the B-17 Flying
Fortress, B-25 Mitchell, P-38 Lightning, Hellcat, Sea Fury, Corsair, SBD
Dauntless, AT-6A, T-34, as well as guest Zero, SNJ and much, much more.
Attending WASPs will speak at scheduled intervals as part of the Lone Star
Flight Museum's Living History Educational Program. There will be WASP
exhibits and the opportunity to purchase commemorative items.
Located at the Municipal Airport, Scholes Field, next to Moody Gardens,
the Lone Star Flight Museum is open daily, 10 - 5.
